The office of the East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner has issued an ‘urgent public advisory’ following 21 Covid deaths in the district in the last 48 hours.
The advisory called for all eligible citizens to get vaccinated without further delay.
According to the Deputy Commissioner, out of the 21 deaths, 11 are from the rural areas and 10 from the urban areas of the district.
Out of these, 19 were not vaccinated and two received only the single dose. Non-institutional deaths accounted to three and two were brought dead to hospital while one died at home.
Institutional deaths are at 18, out of which 15 were brought to the hospital after 48 hours of onset of symptoms including six who were brought after more than five days of onset of symptoms. 12 of these died after more than five days of hospitalisation.
“As the number of cases and deaths in the district is increasing, the general public is strongly urged to not ignore any signs and symptoms of Covid-19 but to report symptoms and get tested at the earliest so that proper care can be advised and monitoring can be done,” the advisory said.
While early presentation to a medical facility prevents further deterioration and death the Deputy Commissioner said that data emerging everyday indicates that those who are vaccinated, even if infected, have a much lower chance of developing serious symptoms, requiring hospitalization and of dying due to the disease.
