An awareness programme on Covid-19 with an objective to motivate the people to get vaccinated against the virus was today held at Laitdom Mawlieh in the premises of the Laitdom Presbyterian School.
The programme was organised by the office of the Block Development Officer, Mairang C&RD Block which was attended by Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker and Local MLA, Metbah Lyngdoh as the chief guest, officials representing various government departments, religious leaders and headmen of the area among others.
The awareness programme also featured awareness on various central sponsored schemes including PMAY, NRLM, MNREGS, DDU-GKY among others.
During his address the Speaker said that central schemes including the MNREGS have been instrumental in uplifting the socio-economic condition of the citizens of the State particularly those residing in the rural areas even as he urged upon those gathered at the programme to adapt to the changes with regards to new guidelines and procedures aimed at streamlining the implementation of such schemes and programmes of the government to ensure better and more efficient delivery of services to the citizens.
Lyngdoh also spoke on community participation during the first wave of the pandemic and emphasized on the need for all stakeholders to remain ever vigilant during the ongoing second wave by strictly following all health protocols and advisories issued by the government from time to time. He also called upon those gathered at the programme to be responsible citizens by continuing to render their most valuable support to frontline workers in their efforts to contain further spread of the pandemic in the State and country.
He also urged people to desist from falling prey to fake news and misinformation which have the capacity to mislead the people thus impacting the combined fight against the pandemic.
A team comprising of health officials from Laitdom PHC and people of the area, led by World Health Organization (WHO) representative, Dr Anita performed a skit on the theme “Protect your Child from Covid-19” which struck a chord with those gathered at the programme.
Among others who spoke during the programme include BDO Mairang C&RD Block V. Syiem, representative from the Indian Red Cross Society, A. Sawian, District Programme Manager, DDU-GKY, Nongstoin, B. Marbaniang, Medical Officer, Laitdom PHC, Dr N. L Mawnai and Headman of the Laitdom Mawlieh, H. Lawriniang.
The awareness programme was followed by a vaccination drive at the venue of the programme.
