The police raid of the farmhouse of state BJP vice-president Bernard N Marak is just the tip of the iceberg of further crimes and unsavoury activities, state Congress Party spokesperson Ronnie Lyngdoh said today.
“The incident comes at a time when the government is facing a heap of allegations of corruption in all spheres of governance,” Lyngdoh said. “Therefore this sudden raid at Marak’s farmhouse on the outskirts of Tura is but a cover-up for all the misdeeds of the government for the past four years.”
He added that the farmhouse is close to the Tura residence of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and it is impossible that he did not know of the types of activities going on there.
Lyngdoh called for an “immediate, independent investigation” to unveil the truth “behind such shameless and nefarious activities which have been happening in the state and, that too, very close to where the Chief Minister resides.”
He also demanded to know from the Home Minister why the police took so long to raid the property when a minor girl was believed to have been raped there in February.
“The allegations made by the accused BJP leader against the Chief Minister that the raid was conducted to vent frustrations over the prospects of defeat by the BJP in the South Tura seat must also be interpreted by looking at the bigger picture. It is crystal clear that the Chief Minister’s desperation is showing and he is now using the police to clean up his own mess,” Lyngdoh added.
