The Confederation of Ri Bhoi People (CoRP), led by its president Bandary Ryntathiang, inspected the bridge at Dwar Ksuid located on the Shillong Bypass.
The bridge had developed cracks in 2020 allegedly due to the effects of overloaded trucks driving over it. The Border Roads Organisation constructed a temporary Bailey bridge nearby while work was undertaken to repair the main bridge.
Ryntathiang said that the bridge at Dwar Ksuid is a very old bridge that was repaired by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) during the construction of the Shillong Bypass and now has many cracks and poses a serious threat to the public.
Stating that CoRP will file an RTI to find out why NHAI did not construct a new bridge but just repaired the already existing bridge when they constructed the Shillong Bypass and the reason the Bailey bridge built by the BRO collapsed after only a few months, Ryntathiang said that today the members of the pressure group came across trucks coming from Assam and Jaiñtia Hills where the drivers admitted that they carrying loads of up to 40 tonnes without hindrance even though this is well above the limit of 10 tonnes.
