The Confederation of Ri Bhoi People (CoRP) has strongly demanded that the state government properly check the land documents before taking a final decision in the second phase of the boundary settlement between Assam and Meghalaya.
CoRP has expressed deep concern during an inspection today at Nongwah Mawtamur, under Jirang constituency, where most of the people claimed that the village is definitely Meghalayan if one looks at the land documents issued by Hima Sohiong since 1967.
Speaking to reporters, CoRP president Bandari Ryntathiang said that the people do not want to become part of Assam but are fearful that the Meghalaya government could give their land away as part of a wider border settlement. Assam has periodically claimed the village for its own.
Village elders have blamed not just the Meghalaya government but also the KHADC for not being serious enough to protect genuine Meghalaya territory.
