The Confederation of Ri-Bhoi People (CORP) alleged today that ‘illegal’ taxes are being collected from farmers and other members of the public at tollgates operated by the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) in Ri-Bhoi.
CORP Organising Secretary Phrang Sohtun claimed that even farmers and other people who are transporting goods within the state are being taxed, failing which they are not allowed to pass through the gates.
Sohtun labeled this an “illegal practice” and said the pressure group will lodge a complaint with the KHADC on the matter and if no action is taken the organisation will take the issue to court.
