The area around Sohra desperately requires corona care centres of its own, a joint letter signed by MLAs and MDCs to Health Minister AL Hek has said.
The letter was signed by Sohra MDC and Chief Executive Member of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), Titosstarwell Chyne, Shella MLA Balajied Synrem and Shella MDC Teinwell Dkhar.
Corona facilities could be set up in the existing Sohra and Ichamati community health centres, the signatories said. Ichamati recently experienced a Covid-related fatality, while Shella has witnessed 28 cases of the disease in the last few days.
Terming the rise in cases as alarming, the representatives said, “We would like to impress upon the Health Department to start a dedicated care centre at Sohra and Ichamati CHCs to facilitate accessible and speedy treatment of Covid-positive patients.”
This would not only make it easier for people living in the region to access vital healthcare but will also take the pressure off of hospitals in Shillong, where people who are ill with Covid invariably come for treatment.
