The opposition Congress has accused the state government of giving a free hand to one Vicky Dey, who has drawn ire from certain people in the state for his take on Meghalaya issues in the recent past.
Umroi MLA George Lyngdoh took up the matter today in the Assembly, saying that, since October last year, Dey has spread a video that reportedly speaks ill and insults the people of Meghalaya.
“This person is on a mission to taint the character of our Meghalaya citizens and to spread false information about the state,” the Congress legislator said, adding that Dey’s goal must be to cause communal divisions.
Lyngdoh also slammed the police for failing to take action against Dey despite it being nearly a year since the original FIR was filed against him. This delay makes it appear as if the state police have given Dey a free hand to “spew venom and spread canards” about Meghalaya and its citizens.
Dey continues to share posts on Facebook, though his last public one on Meghalaya came last month.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, while replying to the call-attention motion, said that the authorities are still making efforts to apprehend Dey. The focus of police is on Goa at the moment, as Dey is suspected to be living or in hiding there. However, efforts by the Goa police have not been successful in locating him.
There has not been any positive response from Kolkata police, or from any other force in the country, to Meghalaya’s look-out notice, the CM added.
