With Meghalaya firmly in the grip of winter, the 6th Meghalaya Police Battalion has been on a drive to distribute blankets to the needy people of the state, with the six localities of Umsning benefiting today.
Blankets were handed over to the respective headmen of the localities, who will, in turn, distribute the items to deserving members of society.
The police programme, dubbed ‘Reaching Out – Beyond the Call of Duty’, has thus far reached 29 villages in and around the battalion headquarters as well as a few villages in other districts and those along the border with Assam. Around 2,000 blankets have been distributed since the programme began on December 1.
The first village to benefit was Umran Niangbyrnai. The initial stages of the initiative saw 500 blankets contributed by battalion personnel. But as it gained ground it really took off and donations started pouring in.
Besides contributions from its own personnel, the drive saw donations from friends and well-wishers, colleagues in the Meghalaya Police and from personnel of other units.
