Protesting contractual teachers in Garo Hills, who had been camped at William Point near Hawakhana since yesterday, called off their strike today owing to the district administration not extending permission to agitate, ostensibly because of the Model Code of Conduct in place for the upcoming Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) election.
The development was confirmed by the teachers who this afternoon returned to their homes with the promise that they will be back to continue their protests once the GHADC elections are over next month.
The teachers have been protesting over the fear that they would be left with no livelihood options if they are axed from their jobs and demanded that they be allowed to continue in their professions and given multiple chances to clear the Meghalaya Teachers Eligibility Test (MTET), which the government insists all teachers must pass.
