The Meghalaya government has cancelled the memorandum of agreement (MoA) struck with two private firms for the construction of the Kynshi Stage 1 and Stage 2 hydroelectric power project, Power Minister and Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong informed today.
The project developers had told the government that they are unable to continue according to the terms of the agreement.
“We had invited all private and public developers with whom the government had signed the MoA back in 2007," Tynson said. In a review meeting, some of the project developers expressed their inability to continue or push forward as they found it not feasible.
So we decided to cancel the MoA.” Stage 1 was entrusted to Athena Power Pvt Ltd and Stage 2 to the JayPee Group. According to the minister, the land that would be affected by the project falls touches areas dominated by uranium deposits and this is one factor that prevented it going forward.
With regards to the Wah Umiam Stage 3 project, the agreement for which was signed in 2012, Tynsong informed that the contracted company, NEEPCO, is in advanced stages.
“The land acquisition is in full swing and once it is completed the concerned District Collector will hand over the land and the project will start very soon,” he said.
