The National Commission for Women (NCW), in collaboration with the Meghalaya State Commission for Women (MSCW), today held a regional level consultation on ‘Combating Human Trafficking in NER’ at the North Eastern Council Auditorium here.
The objective was to improve the effectiveness in tackling cases of human trafficking, raising awareness among women and girls, capacity building and training of anti-trafficking units and to strengthen and sensitise law enforcement machineries.
In her address NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma appreciated the scenario of women in the North East and their dominance in every field. Sharma stressed on devising newer methods of prevention, protection and prosecution of human trafficking of women in the region since it shares international borders with countries like Bangladesh, Nepal and Myanmar, and has invariably become a transit point.
With a view to tackle cases of human trafficking, Sharma said that the NCW, along with state commissions, can play a greater role in creating job opportunities, sensitisation for girls in schools and colleges and holding periodic meeting with stakeholders to review the challenges.
Others who spoke included MSCW chairperson Phidalia Toi and North Eastern Council planning advisor CH Kharshiing.
