A labourer involved in the construction of the new Dwarksuid Bridge died by drowning in an apparent accident today morning.
The deceased was identified as Reno Thawmuid (25). Ri-Bhoi police pulled his body from the river but he was declared dead on reaching Bhoirymbong Community Health Centre. Police are investigating the incident.
Thawmuid was reportedly attempting to cross the river when he lost his balance and fell into the water.
The new, temporary steel bridge, also known as Dwarksuid Bridge, along the Shillong Bypass in Ri-Bhoi District is being constructed after cracks were discovered at the end of last year in the older bridge that spans the river.
