Shillong, Dec 19: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today issued a stern warning to the outlawed Hynñiewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), stating that the Meghalaya government will take firm action against any unlawful activities following yesterday’s IED blast at the Dhar Company premises in Shymplong, East Jaintia Hills.
The militant outfit claimed responsibility for the attack, alleging that the target was linked to Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar after he reportedly refused to comply with extortion demands. One person was moderately injured in the blast.
Responding to queries from reporters about the incident and claims regarding demand notes being served to political leaders, Sangma said he did not have specific details at hand but pointed out supposed contradictions in the group’s statements. He recalled that the militants had, in May, alleged that Dhar had once donated to the outfit but now say that he does not pay them off. However, what the HNLC actually said back in May was that Dhar, while a member of the Congress Party some years ago, had funded the HNLC but now, as a top figure in the National People’s Party (NPP), had cut off the money.
The CM assured that the government would not allow such acts to go unchecked and said law enforcement agencies have already gathered substantial evidence. He added that the police have acted promptly and decisively and those involved will be brought to justice.
