Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma held consultations today with his counterpart from Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, on a range of issues connected to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The duo discussed, via video conferencing, how Meghalaya and Assam could support each other at this difficult time. It is not known whether they also discussed the border dispute existing between the two sides.
Sarma had reportedly promised a token 100 doses of the Covaxin vaccine to Meghalaya as well as oxygen cylinders. Sangma thanked the new Assam CM for his government’s support.
For his part, Sarma requested that Meghalaya not hinder transportation of goods that pass through Meghalaya on their way to Assam’s Barak Valley. Transit of goods and people through Meghalaya have been exempted from Covid containment measures so far.
Assam is also sending a proposal to the central government to make the biggest state in the North East the “oxygen logistics hub” for the region and Sarma requested Meghalaya to back the idea.
