The Meghalaya unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today blamed the Congress Party for allegedly turning major parts of Garo Hills into non-scheduled areas.
In a release today, BJP spokesperson Bernard Marak said that, during the rule of the Congress, many scheduled areas witnessed a change in status, which violated the provisions of the Sixth Schedule. The BJP promised to maintain the “dignity” of the Sixth Schedule against all conspiracies, be it from the Congress or other political parties.
“Non-hill mauzas were introduced to facilitate general administration, like the municipality and open the reserved seats. We will abolish all non-scheduled areas and non-hill mauzas that exist without a Mauzadar – Tura, Williamnagar, Resubelpara, Baghmara, Tikrikilla, Rajabala, Mahendraganj, Dalu, as per RTI findings. These were hidden from the public,” alleged Marak.
He further claimed that municipalities in Garo Hills were functioning without proper no objection certificates from the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC).
“We are aware of the violations of the Sixth Schedule and assure the people to abolish the non-scheduled areas if elected in a majority to the GHADC,” he added.
