Congress legislators will meet Chief Minister Conrad Sangma this week to discuss various issues and problems faced by the state.
“We have been assured an appointment by the CM and we are looking forward to this interaction where we would discuss the current law and order problem, progress on the dialogue concerning the boundary dispute with Assam, the plan of the government on the entire standstill of education because of the coronavirus pandemic, besides other issues,” Congress Legislative Party leader Ampareen Lyngdoh told Highland Post.
On law and order, which was rattled last Sunday with an improvised explosive device (IED) blast in Khyndailad, she said “This problem is right before our faces and, if it is not handled at the earliest, it will deteriorate and be something beyond our capacity to solve.”
However, the East Shillong MLA lauded the swift action taken by police to arrest those suspected of carrying out the attack in quick time.
“We would also look forward to the government informing the public what exactly are the details of this investigation,” Lyngdoh said.
She also said that there are a lot of challenges before the government at this point in time because life has largely come to a standstill for two and a half years because of the Covid-19 pandemic and it continues to be a worrisome situation.
“We have seen that it was said that the Omnicron variant is not a deadly and fatal variant but we are surprised to hear that numerous deaths have occurred, which is worrisome,” the opposition legislator said, adding that this situation is affecting the community to a large degree, with the lack of schooling proving to be frustrating for students and adults alike.
Such a situation could also tempt members of the younger generation into illegal activities, she feared, and the government has to come up with a focused policy to address these matters. One of the people suspected of planting the IED is a minor.
“I have met the Chief Minister who has assured us that he will call us for discussion and dialogue on these various issues,” she informed.
