Opposition Congress today accused the MDA government of playing to the gallery and stated that the independent inquiry instituted to probe into the alleged scams in the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) has not started.
Congress spokesperson, Zenith Sangma told reporters today that the judicial inquiry headed by retired Judge of Allahabad High Court, Justice Ifaqat Ali Khan on June 28 is yet to start with the probe even as 70 days have lapsed.
“It (inquiry) was just an eye wash because it was done just to pacify the people who are demanding it including regional party leaders and of course to play to the gallery,” Zenith said.
While Justice Khan had withdrawn his consent to head the probe panel as he met with an accident the State government had finalised Justice (retired) RN Mishra of the Allahabad High Court.
However, Zenith said that the Chief Minister has to explain on why he “proudly told the people that the commission will complete its inquiry in three months.” He also questioned the reason behind the refusal of the retired judge to head the inquiry.
“Let the Chief Minister explain this. Whether the government didn’t do due diligence before appointing him (retired judge) to have the inquiry commission or the government is pressurizing the inquiry commission to do something which they are not willing to do,” he questioned and reiterated for a CBI probe into the goings on.
