Disgruntled Congress leader Dr Mukul Sangma today said that the state party needs a “course correction” and that he will move the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in this regard.
“I will press for a course correction at an appropriate level within the four walls of our party,” Dr Sangma said.
The ex-Chief Minister has apparently been miffed at the appointment of Shillong MP Vincent H Pala as the new state Congress president. That has spurred rumours that Dr Sangma has been exploring options outside the Congress, with suggestions that he used a recent trip to Kolkata to meet with representatives of the Trinamool Congress.
On this subject he expanded little, only saying, “It is natural I have friends all across different political parties, whether within the state or outside the state.”
However, at least for now, he is sticking with the grand old party but will strive to ensure that the Congress is strengthened.
“If there are reasons for us to see that there are factors which are bound to weaken the party, we must, from my perspective, look for a course correction,” Dr Sangma said.
The leader of the opposition also reiterated that the state’s politicians have failed to infuse the sense of oneness amongst the indigenous people.
“My first and foremost job, as one of the elected representatives, will revolve around that focus,” he said, adding that Meghalayans have an inherent strength, which, he posited, can be seen in how the state economy bounced back in 2015, a year after the ban on rat-hole coal mining caused it to shrink.
