Shillong, Jan 10: The Congress party in Meghalaya has strongly condemned the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government’s decision to repeal the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) 2005, replacing it with the VB-G Ram G-Act, 2025. Lang Kupar War, Chairman of MPCC Media, stated that the move is a ploy to “weaponize” Congress and non-Congress states.
War criticized the new Act, saying it lacks job guarantees and will adversely impact the rural economy, particularly women’s workforce. He announced plans for protests, including hunger strikes and awareness campaigns, against the Act.
The Congress leader questioned the BJP’s glorification of the new Act, pointing out that it doesn’t ensure 100 days of work, let alone 125 days. He cited examples of unfulfilled work allocations in the past and alleged that the Centre’s funding has decreased.
War warned that the Act will have a significant economic and social impact on rural masses, particularly job card holders, and urged people to come together to condemn the move and push for new legislation to protect rural communities from poverty and starvation.
