The five suspended Congress MLAs are being looked on as independent legislators and are reveling in not being tied to their old party, East Shillong representative Ampareen Lyngdoh said today.
After pledging their support to the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance, the five Congress MLAs – the other four being Mohendro Rapsang, Process Sawkmie, Mayralborn Syiem and Kimfa Marbaniang – were suspended by their party but showered with cushy rewards by the government.
Also criticised for their conduct by the Trinamool Congress, whose members quit the Congress in November, Lyngdoh said that it is ridiculous for these critics to throw eggs at the five
independent.
The five of us are in a good position. We are in a position of authority, we are in a position where officials look at us and our requests from a different perspective, she said. This will only be a gain for our constituencies.
Meanwhile, what action will be taken by the Congress against the five rebels will be decided by the top brass at the state level.
To date, the five have not replied to the showcause notice issued to them by the party. State party working president Pynshngain Syiem said that any action will be decided on by the president, vice-president and other state party leaders.
Syiem warned the rebels that their decision could backfire come 2023 if their constituents are not onboard.
The party also held a discussion on several other issues, such as strengthening the organisation at all levels, especially the grassroots. Syiem felt sure that support from the public remains strong and that the Congress will bounce back.
