As with the rest of the country, Meghalayans mourned the passing of Lata Mangeshkar.
On social media, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, who is campaigning for his National People’s Party in Manipur, took time to share a video of his late father, the then Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Purno Sangma, and the famous singer of whom he was a “huge fan”.
“Your legacy lives on Lata Ji!” Conrad wrote.
Leader of the opposition, Dr Mukul Sangma, said he was “deeply anguished and shaken” by Mangeshkar’s death.
“My deepest condolences two all her loved ones. Grown up listening to her melodious songs – a heartthrob to billions! A legend is gone and deep void left; may her melodies keep inspiring us,” he tweeted.
The general secretary of the Central Puja Committee of Meghalaya, JL Das, send a release to the press, saying, “India’s golden voice, Bharat Ratna, legendary singer, Queen of Melody Lata Mangeshkar ji has expired today morning in Mumbai. Central Puja Committee, Meghalaya, joins the nation in mourning for the great soul and offers heartfelt condolences to the millions of fans of Lata Ji.”
