Shillong, Sep 16 : Congress MLA Zenith Sangma today claimed that the state government has failed in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic. He also alleged that businessmen were
given free access to the state to hold meeting with Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, ignoring quarantine protocols meant to protect the public.
“There was no roadmap and a lack of coordination between the government and the district administrations in as far as handling
the Covid-19 situation,” Sangma said. “The pandemic is a burning issue across the globe and because of this everybody is living on the edge. But in the context of Meghalaya, I could see a complete failure.”
He also alleged that the state government did not pay heed despite repeated request to come up with proactive measures so that the state would be able to handle the challenges of the pandemic.
“There is lack of coordination and different district administrations have different ideas in as far as fighting the pandemic is concerned,” he said.
Sangma also informed that patients referred to NEIGRIHMS or other referral centre are not provided with an ambulance to travel from Garo Hills.
“We have been flagging this issue before the government because any ambulance staff coming from Tura to bring a patient to Shillong have to compulsorily quarantine when they return to Garo Hills,” he said, adding that because of this patients source their ambulances from Goalpara in Assam.
Alleging that people representing business houses could enter the state freely, the opposition MLA said that now the government has made arrangements that if people come from outside the state, they need not take permission provided they go back and
leave the state within 72 hours.
“Earlier, without permission also they could enter the state and visit the Secretariat,” Sangma alleged.
