Shillong, Feb 14: Lyndem village in East Khasi Hills district has set a precedent for other villages to follow by demonstrating a commendable example of community spirit in ensuring every household has access to clean water.
Each household in the village contributes Rs 70, a small investment that collectively results in substantial funding for the maintenance and sustainability of the Jal Jeevan Mission.
With around 180 households benefiting from the project, the village under the Pynursla C& RD Block is now equipped with a reliable water supply system, serving not only households but also schools and Anganwadi Centers.
“We are thrilled to have clean water at our doorstep,” said Ebren Khongthah, Rangbah Shnong of Lyndem recently to mark the completion of the water supply scheme.
He appreciated the PHE department’s hard work and the residents who donated land for the construction and installation of water tanks.
Village Water and Sanitation Committee Member Jintina Khongsam explained the purpose of the scheme, urging residents to maintain the pipelines and water supply systems. “We have received training from the PHE office, and it’s essential we take care of this precious resource,” she said.
PHE Executive Engineer Kerdalang Siej and Junior Engineer Secondborn Suting gave a detailed explanation of the scheme’s construction.
Pynursla Block Development Officer Lamriche Kharmon highlighted the importance of collaboration between the PHE office and the village to ensure maximum benefits from the scheme.
The event also featured a demonstration of Field Testing Kits (FTKs) used to test water quality, and PHE staff addressed questions from the residents about the Jal Jeevan Mission.
As a token of recognition, the BDO handed over the Har Ghar Jal certificate to the Rangbah Shnong, certifying that Lyndem village has achieved 100 per cent coverage of household tap connections.
As Lyndem village progresses towards more reliable water access, their journey is a testament to what can be achieved through collaboration and commitment. By investing in their community, the residents are laying a foundation for sustainable development and a healthier future for all.
