The state government will constitute a committee to revisit the Meghalaya Building Bylaws to see if there is any scope for improvement even as the district councils want to implement the bylaws throughout the state.
Speaking to media persons after meeting with representatives of the district councils, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said that the Meghalaya Urban Development Authority will implement the law within the municipal areas and also in industrial estates, hotels and big institutions.
“In the rest of the areas outside the municipal areas and under the Sixth Schedule, the entire law will be implemented by the district councils,” Tynsong said.
Lauding the idea of the district councils to implement the bylaws across the state, Tynsong said that it would be a good idea in terms of safety for the populace as Meghalaya is in a high seismic risk zone.
“So, we have decided to constitute a committee which will be headed by the Secretary of the Urban Affairs Department, which will study and revisit the law to see whether amendments are required. The other members of the committee will be members of the district councils and officials of the Urban Affairs and Revenue Departments,” the Deputy CM said.
Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council Chief Executive Member, Pyniaid Sing Syiem, told reporters that the KHADC is ready to implement the law as its technical wing is equipped with technical professionals and engineers.
“We are ready to implement the building bylaws beyond the master plan areas as we are concerned with destroying landscapes and even water bodies,” he said.
