The East Jaiñtia Hills District Transport Officer, R. Hinge has urged commercial taxi drivers to avail permits at the earliest from the office.
Addressing an awareness programme held to conclude the week-long Road Safety Week at Lad Rymbai Dongwah today he informed that the office will conduct regular inspections to stop private vehicles from plying illegally as commercial vehicles in the district.
He said that commercial vehicle drivers should have all the legal documents required to drive such as a Driving license, Vehicle Registration Certificate, Permit, and Fitness Certificate, etc. to avoid paying fines and punishments, etc.
The awareness programme was organised by the Office of the District Transport Officer in collaboration with the District Administration, Public Works Department, Police Department and the Health Department to to propagate the cause of safer roads.
Hinge stated that due to an increase in the number of road accidents deaths in the state, Road Safety Week is observed for raising awareness and promoting road safety rules and measures in order to prevent and reduce road accidents.
He stressed on the importance of obeying traffic rules and road signs while driving for the smooth flow of traffic and to save lives from the potential risk of accidents.
Sub inspector of Lad Rymbai police outpost, D. Warjri in his speech on traffic rules, said that road accidents happen mostly due to poor condition of roads, reckless driving, over-speeding, and overtaking. “In order to prevent traffic congestion and save lives from the potential risk of accidents, we should drive cautiously, obey the traffic rules and road signs, park vehicles only in designated areas and wear helmets at all times when riding two-wheelers” he added.
Motor Vehicle Inspector H. Dkhar said that commercial drivers play a very important role in the transportation of goods and people to different locations. He also stated that drivers should pay attention to all the road signage erected on the roadside and obey traffic rules and follow the speed limit to prevent road accidents. He also stressed on the importance of using car indicators to communicate on the road while taking turns, overtaking, parking, etc. which is an integral part of road safety.
“In cases of road accidents, a driver should call an ambulance or immediately take the injured person to the nearest hospital or health center,” he said and also appealed to the taxi drivers to always keep a first aid kit and a fire extinguisher in their vehicles for emergencies.
