Shillong, Apr 1: The supply constraints facing commercial LPG users should ease somewhat in the coming days, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma opined today while not making any guarantees.
Given the shock to supplies brought on by the Iran War, the central government has prioritised supply to domestic users to the cost of restaurants and hotels.
Sangma pointed out that while domestic supply in Meghalaya continues to be relatively stable, there are minor shortages in some areas. However, he highlighted that the situation is more challenging when it comes to commercial LPG, with shortages being reported across the country.
He said allocations for commercial LPG have been increased from 20 per cent to 70 per cent of the original quota for states, though the impact of this revision is yet to be fully realised. The CM expressed hope that supply levels will improve in the coming days, providing some relief.
Hotels and restaurants have had to switch to alternative fuels where possible, cut down on menu items and down their shutters altogether as commercial cylinders become hard to get hold of.
Meanwhile, Sangma stated that the long-delayed LPG bottling plant in the state is now moving ahead at a brisk pace, with completion expected in the near future.
Construction at the site on the Shillong Bypass near Umroi is progressing quickly and is on track for early completion, the CM said.
He acknowledged that the facility should have been completed much earlier but maintained that the government has now brought it to an advanced stage where its commissioning can be expected soon.
