Shillong, Mar 19: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today met Meghalaya Governor CH Vijayashankar at Lok Bhavan here to apprise him of the law and order situation in Garo Hills.
Sangma was in Garo Hills region for an extended period of around two weeks due to the flare-up in communal violence there last week.
“This required my full attention so I was there in Garo Hills and all this while I was only able to communicate with the Governor on the phone. Therefore I felt it appropriate that I must come and brief him about the current situation and the different incidents that led to the law and order situation that we faced,” he said.
When asked about the arrests made by police in Garo Hills in the aftermath of the violence, Sangma said that the arrests are purely the police department’s responsibility based on evidence and the law.
Sangma was accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, who is also in charge of the police.
Sangma said that the violence in Garo Hills has reduced and normalcy has returned to a large extent. Curfews have gradually been eased and yesterday mobile internet services were restored throughout Garo Hills.
Garo Hills has been tense following violent clashes between tribal and non-tribal groups over the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections.
The violence, which erupted on March 9, led to two deaths, property damage and the suspension of internet services in all five districts.
