Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today had a meeting with members from the Khasi Authors’ Society and A’chik Literature Society here today.
Sangma said that the purpose of the meeting was to discuss the strategy to pursue with the Indian government for the inclusion of Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution and to discuss the steps that can be taken by the Meghalaya government to widely promote the languages in the state, especially among the youth.
“While we discuss the way forward for the inclusion of the Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule, it is also important for us to promote the languages in the state, not only through academics, seminars and symposiums, but also through movies, music and other forms of art and broaden the activities,” the CM said.
The meeting was also attended by Chief Secretary Rebecca V Suchiang, Commissioner and Secretary of Arts and Culture Cyril V Diengdoh.
