Shillong, Feb 6: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today lauded Meghalaya’s economic growth and took all the credit for it. He was speaking at a ‘pre-budget consultation meeting’ today ahead of the state budget presentation for 2026-27, which he will make during next week’s Assembly session.
Participants included academics, economists, civil society organisations, farmer associations, government officials and journalists.
Although billed as a consultation, and though participants were pictured addressing the CM directly, the official press release from the Department of Finance only highlighted points made by Sangma himself.
The CM, who holds the reins of the Finance Department, extolled the virtues of his government, stating that Meghalaya is the second-fastest growing state in terms of GSDP; that the state is the only one in the country to have recorded real GSDP (i.e. taking inflation into account) growth of 10 percent for three consecutive post-Covid years; that public expenditure has risen more than three times; that Meghalaya is performing well in the central government’s interest-free loan scheme for capital investment; and that the state has been able to attract funding for externally-aided projects.
He touted growth in tourism and agriculture, as well as Meghalaya’s improving health indicators, such as a decline in its maternal mortality rate.
Citizens were encouraged to continue sharing suggestions through email via megh.finead@gmail.com or the CM Connect helpline to support an inclusive, people‑centric budget.
