Shillong, Mar 11: Conrad K. Sangma, Chief Minister of Meghalaya, has made a heartfelt appeal to citizens to maintain peace and refrain from violence amid recent tensions in the Garo Hills region.
In a video message addressed to the people, the Chief Minister expressed concerns over escalating violence and stated that he received inputs that certain groups and individuals intent on burning his home and attacking his family.
Sangma said despite receiving advice from security personnel to relocate for safety due to credible threats, as per perotocol, he said he chose to remain at his residence.
“I was advised to move out for safety, but I decided to remain at home. I am not afraid,” he said in the message.
The Chief Minister said that his life ultimately rests in the hands of the Lord and will continue to draw inspiration, courage and determination from his late father, P. A. Sangma. He added that he deeply loves his community and is committed to working for the welfare and progress of the people with utmost integrity and honesty.
Expressing concern over the ongoing unrest, the Chief Minister noted that incidents of vandalism and destruction have been reported, including damage to government properties and religious places. He also highlighted reports of people’s homes being intruded upon and families being disturbed. Such actions, he said, do not reflect the values and principles of the community and society.
Emphasising the need for calm and restraint, the Chief Minister urged citizens to refrain from acts of violence and destruction. He stressed that the present situation can only be resolved through dialogue and constructive engagement.
Calling upon the public to respect democratic systems and institutions, he urged everyone to place the interests of the community and the state above all else and work collectively towards restoring peace and harmony.
“This is my earnest appeal to all,” the Chief Minister said while concluding his message.
