Shillong, Feb 7: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has issued a pressing call for vigilance among the citizens of the State in light of various challenges that Bangladesh is currently facing, politically and economically.
Speaking at a function at Merengipara near Mahendraganj in South West Garo Hills district today, Sangma noted the ongoing challenges in the neighbouring country stating that it has had a direct impact on border communities.
He urged citizens to remain vigilant and called for close cooperation with the administration by sharing relevant information on cross-border crimes with the police and other agencies, stressing that public cooperation is essential to maintain peace and security.
Sangma said that border residents of Mahendraganj face challenges due to poor road infrastructure in the past, which had adversely affected daily life, trade and access to essential services. He said that road connectivity has improved significantly through various State and Central government schemes.
Addressing issues arising from the closure of border gates in the evening he informed that the local MLA has proposed the construction of an alternative bypass road. A survey will be initiated to construct bypass roads in border areas, ensuring smooth movement and public convenience, he added.
Sangma said that connectivity remains a key focus to enhance trade and mobility, and reiterated the government’s long-term vision of developing the region into a hub of economic and industrial activity.
