Shillong, Nov 28: The State government has sanctioned Rs 54 crore under the Smart Town Project for construction of paver block roads for different localities in Tura.
This was announced by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma who inaugurated one such project at Lower Hawakhana, Tura today. He also informed that about Rs 1400 crore is being invested in different development projects for the town.
He said the paver block road is a small yet significant scheme has brought a major transformation in the locality. The chief minister sought the cooperation of residents in the government’s effort to bring about transformation in the district headquarter of West Garo Hills district.
Sangma said that the government is working towards bringing a balanced development not only in all district headquarters but also development in the localities of the towns.
On issues flagged by the locality development committee of Lower Hawakhana, the he assured to take up on priority basis the approach road to the locality graveyard and the retaining wall for the locality church.
Later the Chief Minister also interacted with the residents of the locality who brought to light issues of public toilets, street lights, CCTVs etc.
Earlier, the chief minister handed over cheques to 60 localities of Tura under the Tura Beautification Project, in a program organised by Tura Municipal Board.
He listed upcoming projects and infrastructures for Tura through a presentation like construction of an additional Secretariat, improvement of Tura Super Market, PA Sangma Integrated Sports Complex, Convention Centre, Pelga Tourism Circuit, Tura Youth and Cultural Centre, which is still at the conceptualisation stage, projects for improving water supply, installation and management of street lights and CCTVs among others. He highlighted in detail the costs, time frame of completion and main features of these projects.
Sangma also stressed on the need to improve public transportation and mooted the idea of having electrical autos for a green National Games, 2027. He said he would engage with the auto association for exchanging their existing autos.
He also emphasised on the need to have children’s parks and green spaces and informed that such parks and open spaces will be funded and developed by the government which will be handed over to communities for operation and management.
He further urged people to participate in the ‘Paint My City Campaign’ towards the cleanliness and beautification of Tura.
The top three Best Performing Localities were given Rs 1 lakh each while the other localities received Rs 70,000.
Senior officials from the district administration and Tura Municipal Boards besides members of the locality development committees were also present during the occasion.
