Various civil bodies under the United Garo Autonomous Council Movement Committee (UGACMC) have moved to dissolve the members of the UGACMC that had decided to support the Garo Development Council (GDC).
The move comes in the wake of unrest within the community in Assam which has been demanding a full-fledged autonomous council for the Garos of Assam but was left fuming when the UGACMC members decided to settle for a development council only, a press release here said.
In a memorandum submitted to the deputy commissioner of Goalpara, Varnali Deka, the civil bodies, including the ASYFI, AAGGA, GWF, GNC (Assam State), GNUWW, GNUYW, Assam Gaonbura Association among others, the members informed on their decision to dissolve the members.
“We held a meeting on March 11 at Bakrapur, Damra at the headquarter of the Assam Gaonbura Association, where we decided on dissolving the members for their acceptance of the development council. This development council has been rejected multiple times by us but was accepted by them through a notification dated January 28, 2021, with the Assam government,” said the members.
The decision of the civic bodies has been unanimous with them also rejecting the government’s offer of a development council.
“The self-styled members of the UGACMC accepted the government’s proposition without even consulting the members of the Garo community or its leaders in Assam. It was therefore resolved to remove them with immediate effect. We will be inducting new members to lead our fight for a Garo Autonomous Council (GAC) soon, the details of which will be communicated later,” added the civil society members.
The members removed from the UGACMC include the advisor, chairman, general secretary along with another 20 members of the UGACMC forum.
The civil body members also warned the general public of being wary of working with members of the UGACMC that have been ejected from the body.
