Shillong, Aug 16: A church was set on fire in Pomlahier, Mawryngkneng in East Khasi Hills district, by unidentified people.
The incident was reported on August 15 at 2 am by residents who saw smoke emanating from the church. The residents who rushed to the scene were able to put out the fire quickly before major damage could be done to the church.
However, the flames burned the chairs, benches, and wooden floors inside the church.
The faithful suspected that some miscreants had thrown kerosene into the church through a window. It’s not clear what the miscreants intended when they set the church on fire, but it’s suspected that before fleeing, they wrote some incomprehensible signs on one of the windows.
Soon after the incident, police rushed to the church to conduct an investigation and collect evidence. The police are also conducting a search operation to apprehend the suspects.
This act by the miscreants has upset the residents of the village, and many believe it was an attempt to burn down the church.
Church elder Klorsing Kharsati said that when he arrived at the site, many residents had already arrived and had extinguished the fire.
