The Khasi Jaintia Christian Leaders Forum (KJCLF) has put some of the blame on Sunday’s road accident which claimed the lives of six people travelling to Shillong from Assam on the failure of the authorities to do more for road safety.
Six people were killed almost instantly after a truck travelling in the opposite direction jumped the divider and smashed into the Bolero carrying the church team. The deceased comprised a priest, three nuns, one teacher at a Catholic school and their driver.
While paying condolences, the KJCLF said that their deaths were snuffed out by the “callous and criminally reckless action of the driver (of the truck) and inaction of the authorities responsible for road safety and most importantly for checking on overloaded lorries and carriers plying on busy roads and highways.”
The forum called on the state government to provide immediate relief, support and adequate compensation to the families of the deceased and take steps to ensure that such accidents do not reoccur.
