Shillong, Feb 4: The District Legal Services Authority of East Khasi Hills organised a legal awareness programme-cum-mock rescue and public demonstration at Police Bazar as part of the “100 days District wise Action Plan for Prevention of Child Marriages in Meghalaya”.
This initiative is under the NALSA (ASHA – Awareness, Support, Help, and Action SOP – Towards Eliminating Child Marriage) Scheme, 2025 and Bal Vivah Mukt Bharat Campaign.
Deputy Chief Defence Counsel Naphi Laso stated that the programme aims to spread awareness about preventing child marriages in Meghalaya. The office provides free legal aid and helps victims navigate the legal process. It also offers support and rehabilitation services to victims and their families.
Meghalaya’s Child Helpline, 1098, is a 24-hour emergency service dedicated to supporting children in need. The primary focus is on children under 15, particularly those requiring care and protection, as well as those in conflict with the law.
The helpline receives calls from concerned individuals who have encountered children in distress, including lost or abandoned kids, victims of abuse or neglect and those working in hazardous conditions.
The service also addresses issues like school dropouts, behavioural problems and orphaned children needing shelter, foster care or adoption. Various schemes are available through the District Child Protection Unit to support these vulnerable kids.
