Shillong, Sep 18: Nongthymmai Legislator Charles Pyngrope has been appointed as the new opposition chief whip in the State Assembly.
Pyngrope is the MLA of the Trinamool Congress which is the principal opposition party in the State.
As per rules, only the principal opposition party can have the post of leader of opposition and opposition chief whip.
Lyngdoh’s appointment was notified by the Assembly Secretariat on September 15 following the defection of Ronnie V Lyngdoh to the governing National People’s Party (NPP).
Trinamool Congress has five MLAs in the Assembly. The VPP has four, including its suspended MLA Adelbert Nongrum.
With Lyngdoh’s defection, the Congress has been wiped out of the Meghalaya Assembly.
