The A’chik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM) announced today that its founder president, former policeman-turned-militant Champion R Sangma has vacated the presidency of the pressure group in order to join politics.
AHAM held an emergency meeting on Saturday where its central executive board accepted Sangma’s resignation and accepted his decision to appoint George Prince Cheran Momin, the former vice-president, as the new leader.
AHAM also relieved Cherian Momin, the chief organising secretary, of his role as he has also joined politics.
Sangma had deserted the Meghalaya Police when he was a Deputy Superintendent of Police and formed the outlawed Garo National Liberation Army in 2009. It quickly became one of the most dreaded militant outfits in the state before fizzling out after increased police determination to crush it.
Sangma was arrested in 2012 after being handed over to Indian authorities by Bangladesh. He was charged under a string of laws, including the stringent Unlawful Activities Prevention Act but managed to secure bail.
