Shillong, Mar 2: Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Virendra Kumar on Monday said that any challenges faced by Meghalaya in Aadhaar linkage or implementation of centrally sponsored schemes would be addressed in coordination with the state government to ensure beneficiaries are not deprived of welfare support.
Speaking to reporters after a review meeting in East Khasi Hills, the Union Minister clarified that the Centre formulates schemes for the entire country and implements them uniformly across states. However, if specific geographical or administrative difficulties arise — particularly in states like Meghalaya — efforts are made to resolve them in a time-bound and practical manner.
“Schemes are designed for the whole nation and implemented in all states with uniformity. If any state faces temporary challenges, we work towards resolving them so that beneficiaries receive the same benefits as elsewhere,” he said, responding to queries on Aadhaar linkage concerns in certain areas of Meghalaya.
Kumar stated that discussions would be held with concerned departments to address any inconvenience faced by citizens in linking Aadhaar with welfare schemes. He assured that corrective steps would be taken to streamline the process wherever required.
The review meeting covered multiple centrally sponsored schemes, including the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana, and Mission Vatsalya, along with schemes under the School Education Department and Social Welfare initiatives.
Officials from various departments briefed Kumar on the status of implementation in East Khasi Hills.
During his visit, he toured several institutions, including schools, childcare institutions, an old age home, women’s welfare centres and facilities for children. He interacted directly with beneficiaries and staff to assess whether schemes were reaching the grassroots level effectively and to identify any bottlenecks.
“Important points have emerged during these interactions, and they have been noted for further action,” he said.
Highlighting the coordination between the Centre and the State, Kumar said the “double-engine government” model – where both Meghalaya and the national governments are run by members of the National Democratic Alliance – was helping accelerate development initiatives in Meghalaya.
“Wherever additional intervention is required, the state government communicates with the Centre. Together we review and take corrective steps so that North Eastern states progress on par with the rest of the country,” he added.
