Two roads in Ri-Bhoi that had been allowed to deteriorate for two decades will finally be upgraded after the Union Ministry of Rural Development approved a grant of Rs 17.88 crore for them.
The 14km Bhoirymbong-Mawbsein and 10km Nongthymmai-Khyndewso roads got into such bad shape that locals took matters into their own hands and made temporary repairs to the roads themselves last year using what means they had at their disposal.
Former Umroi MLA George Lyngdoh expressed his gratitude to the central government and state Public Works Department for the grant through a tweet.
He further added that the hard labour of all the PWD officers and central government is appreciated and the construction work should start soon to fulfill the needs of the people.
The people of the region have been eagerly awaiting for improvements to these roads to address the long-standing transportation issues.
