After days of enjoying a seemingly endless inwards flow of support, the National People’s Party (NPP) today experienced a mass defection of more than 100 party workers from Nongpoh.
They were reportedly disappointed with allotment of party tickets by the party high command without, they said, consulting those on the ground at the constituency level. Recently the NPP welcomed Umsning MDC Macdalyn Sawkmie Mawlong into its fold after she quit the People’s Democratic Front (PDF) and the Nongpoh NPP workers are unhappy that she will be the party’s contender for the Nongpoh Assembly seat in next year’s election.
The decision to resign was taken at a meeting held today at the NPP office here.
The major resignations concerned the local party adviser CB Syiem, block president Augustine Wahlang, general secretary Tiplem Lymphuid, women’s win president Delis Malai, et al.
Choosing a candidate without consulting the constituency party is a violation of internal procedures, the Nongpoh NPP leaders said.
