Out of every 1 lakh individuals about 200 are affected by cancer in East Khasi Hills district.
This was revealed during an event held to observe World Cancer Day in Pynursla Community Health Centre (CHC) today.
Member Secretary of State Cancer Society of Meghalaya Dr. Anisha Mawlong said the statistic is alarming as East Khasi Hills ranks second among men and eleventh among women for having the highest number of cancer patients in the county.
She attributed tobacco consumption as one of the leading contributing factors to the high prevalence of cancer in Meghalaya and emphasised the critical role of early detection and lifestyle modifications in preventing the disease.
The event brought together healthcare professionals, government officials, and community members under the theme “United by Unique” aimed to raise awareness about cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment, while fostering a sense of unity in the fight against this global health challenge.
Joint Director of Health Services (MCH & FW) Dr. C. Iangrai emphasised the critical importance of collaborative efforts among healthcare providers, policymakers, and the community to effectively reduce the burden of cancer in the region.
Dr. Iangrai highlighted the government’s proactive steps in transforming Sub Health Centres into Health and Wellness Centres. These upgraded facilities are now fully equipped with essential medicines and staffed by qualified healthcare professionals, including NCD nurses and health workers, to ensure comprehensive care for the community.
She also urged everyone to prioritise regular health screenings and recommended annual check-up for high blood pressure and blood sugar levels, as well as a cancer screening every five years. These measures, she stressed, are vital for early detection and prevention, ultimately leading to better health outcomes for all.
Junior Rural Development Officer (JRDO) of the C&RD Development Block Office in Pynursla A Lyngkhoi emphasised the crucial role that local governance plays in supporting healthcare initiatives and informed the public about the benefits of the Meghalaya Health Insurance Scheme (MHIS) Card.
A total of 70 patients were screened for cancer, diabetes and hypertension during the programme.
