The District Magistrate of East Khasi Hills has reiterated that bull fights and fights staged between other animals are banned in the district under prevailing laws and a Supreme Court judgement.
In an order dated February 10 but shared with the media today, the DM imposed Section 163 of the BNSS to prohibit bull/animal fights in East Khasi Hills.
The DM’s order states that she has been made aware of “rampant holding” of bull and other animal fights in the district, “especially while holding fetes/other festivals”. These fights (including those taking place in other districts) are often openly advertised to promote these fetes and graphic videos of the fights are frequently shared on social media.
The DM stated that such fights go against the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960 and the Supreme Court’s ruling on bullfights in 2014.
