More acquainted with seizing cattle or drugs, the personnel of the Border Security Force (BSF) made an unusual seizure yesterday in the form of human hair that was being smuggled to Bangladesh.
The border sentinels seized several bags of human hair weighing 100kg from East Khasi Hills.
BSF Meghalaya Frontier Inspector General Inderjit Singh Rana said, “This is a new trend as this is the second case this year. First detection was sometime in February. No such cases have ever been detected prior to this year.” Real human hair is often used in the manufacture of wigs.
The value of the seized hair is estimated to be around Rs 10,000, sources informed, adding it was being transported on foot, with the smugglers targeting the more porous parts of the border where there is no fencing. On this occasion, the smugglers discarded their goods on spotting the BSF personnel.
Bangladesh has also emerged as a new transit hub for human hair smuggling for further shipping to China. Earlier, Myanmar was used as the transit country of choice.
