The Border Security Force (BSF) seized 16 cattle from the international border in East Khasi Hills that were meant to be smuggled into Bangladesh.
The seizure was made in the early hours of Tuesday morning. The BSF also confiscated the three vehicles in which the cattle had been “crammed mercilessly”.
The BSF in Meghalaya has begun mobile check posts (MCPs) at strategic vantage points on vulnerable routes leading to the international border in East Khasi Hills, West Jaiñtia Hills and East Jaiñtia Hills. These are meant to check the illegal transport of cattle and other contraband.
“Smuggling of cattle has significantly come down after placement of these mobile check posts,” the BSF said in a release today.
However, such has been the success of these MCPs, the border force said, that smugglers are instigating the public in places to raise their voices against the BSF presence.
