While Breaking Bad is one of the most popular TV shows across the world, one wouldn’t have thought that they would see a similar case in Meghalaya, where the state’s biggest drug bust was made in East Jaiñtia Hills district.
The Anti Narcotic Task Force seized 10.16 kg of crystal meth or high-purity methamphetamine from Kongong today.
While previous drug seizures in Meghalaya had heroin, marijuana and yaba tablets as the main components, this is the first time that the drug has been seized in the state, police said.
The seizure was made from one Lalhmunsanga Beingaichho of Siaha district in Mizoram, who was travelling from Aizwal via Silchar towards Khliehriat in a tourist Sumo bearing registration number AS 01 KC 9188.
East Jaiñtia Hills Superintendent of Police, Jagpal Singh Dhanoa said based on credible information the person was detected at Kongong. During the search 10 packets of the drug were recovered from his suitcase.
He said the price of the drug is approximately 100 USD per gram and the seizure could be approximately Rs 70 crore.
“The seizure of meth is a serious concern as we are now dealing with a high-end drug which is more addictive than heroin,” Dhanoa said.
He said a case under NDPS Act is being registered in Khliehriat police station and investigation is on.
Meth is considered more lethal than other drugs as on an average, 4.8 per cent of its users required emergency medical attention after consumption, according to the Global Drug Survey.
Meth, which gives an instant high, is used in rave parties and mixed with other drugs to make them more addictive.
