Due to alleged breaches of Covid-19 protocols, the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills has ordered that the markets at Smit and Lad Smit be closed until further notice.
The Incident Commander responsible for the area had reported that “traders/vendors and the public … are not following the protocols” of the Health Department regarding overcrowding, physical distancing and wearing of facemasks.
The DC said that the Block Development Officer of Mawryngkneng will hold a meeting with the Syiem of Hima Khyrim and other officials in this regard before the markets are allowed to open.
Other markets in Shillong proper were also seen to be overflowing with shoppers buying supplies after the weekend closure of all shops. Others just seemed to be out more for a breath of fresh air than anything else.
