The Border Magistrate from Ri-Bhoi visited Ummat village today after Assam police seized water pipes belonging to the Meghalaya government there.
The Assam police were acting after a lawmaker from West Karbi Anglong, Rupsing Teron, paid a visit to Ummat and instructed the police to seize 117 pipes after claiming that the project to provide water connections was being carried out on Assam territory.
The seized pipes were then taken to an Assam police camp situated in Umlaper, a village disputed between Meghalaya and Assam.
The Ri-Bhoi magistrate, Raja Brahma, who was accompanied by Meghalaya police, visited Ummat today for a spot inquiry.
Headman Phor Mukhim and others from the village denied Teron’s claims, saying that the pipes were used by the Meghalaya government to provide water connections under the central Jal Jeevan Mission.
Brahma submitted his report on the matter to the Deputy Commissioner of Ri-Bhoi for further action.
Sources informed that the Ummat headman has filed an FIR at Mawlasnai police outpost against the Assam police and Teron over the incident.
