Shillong MP and state Congress president Vincent Pala will visit disputed border areas whose residents are furious at having their land given to Assam as part of the recent agreement with Meghalaya.
When asked if the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government is making the right move, he said, “They are doing this for their own interest and the interest of some of the high-level people and are giving away people’s lands and saving theirs in the process.”
The border deal was signed between the two states in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi at the end of March.
The Meghalaya government had been extremely reluctant to share details about the agreement before it was signed, unwilling to even present it to the Assembly during last month’s budget session.
“If this goes on the people will have to go to court,” Pala added.
